Current Musings: East Asia

Korea. Japan. China.

In your typical working-class Black girl's life, these cultures would only manifest around my community in my local hair store, "Chinese" food take-out, or ethnic grocery store.

But as we all know, I am not the typical working-class Black girl.  I mean, who is, really?

But anywho, I find myself continually looking to these cultures for guidance in the most varied ways:

Crashes:

1. So my mind is kinda blown - I mean I knew that the "food" at the Chinese food place in ANY Black neighborhood probably wasn't authentic, but I didn't know just how fake it all was.  So thanks to this video, learned the top foods most Chinese folk would not eat/order/consider real in any way (or if they do eat it, its as an American snack food):

  • fried moon-crater-looking egg rolls
  • ANYTHING with American broccoli
  • General Tso's Chicken - or Sesame Chicken (which is essentially the same)
  • Crab Rangoon (but its SOOOO tasty!)

Instead I discovered this super amazing looking dish from Shanghai, now enjoyed across the world:
Now, she's a top chef and all, but I had to verify that this would be somewhat similar to what others have enjoyed.  Then I found this blog post via The Woks of Life and am feeling pretty good about it.

Will be a food adventure soon!
